Did you know that Lake Oswego was once occupied by the Clackamas Indians? In 1850 the US Government gave away land in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Wyoming to people if they would live on the land and cultivate it for 4 years. Single men got 320 acres, and married couples got 640 acres, half of which each partner would hold in their own name, one of the first laws allowing women this right. (The law was passed on September 27th, 1850. The catch? You had to arrive in the Oregon territory to get your land before December 1, 1850. If you arrived after the deadline, but before 1854, you'd only receive half the amount of land!) Conclusion? The American settlers of Lake Oswego were fast and smart. Later land developer Paul Murphy, whose Oswego Lake Country Club helped promote the new city as a place to "live where you play," helped in the development of the water system and encouraged the building of fine homes in the 1930's and 40's.
